On Monday Tori and I went out to PCC to register for her first class. She got her first choice, Sociology. We only had to wait a couple of minutes to see and advisor. I expected a long wait as it was the first day for dual enrolled students to register. Public school is still in session, so most of those kids would still be in classes. Likely when we come back to register in August for a fall term class, there will be a long wait.
After seeing the price of college textbooks, even used, we have tentatively decided to have Tori switch to being enrolled as a Collegiate High School student next year. You have to be starting your junior or senior year to enroll, Tori is just starting her sophomore year now, so she will still dual enroll this year. I'd had some misconceptions about the program that made it not a choice we would take, but with those cleared up, I can see it will be a good program for us. The best benefit is that we won't have to pay for the books. She'll no longer be a homeschooled or private schooled student, she'll be a public school student, but I think it won't really make a difference. We'll see. I can switch back to the private school and straight dual enrolling if we need to later.
Tuesday was Crazy Olympics at Homeschool PE. There are all sorts of silly games for the kids to play, obstacle courses, parachute pickup, general zaniness. They are repeating the event this week, so hopefully I'll get some pictures this time. We had art co-op that afternoon and decided we are going to take a break for the summer and just have playdate get togethers. Both Jeannette and I will have our oldest daughters taking classes at PCC over the summer. We have another family that will be joining our art co-op in the fall. They will be using the curriculum over the summer to catch up to the lessons we have already worked through.
Wednesday was a schoolwork and take it easy day.
Thursday morning we had a field trip to the Mulberry Phosphate Museum. Phosphate is one of the biggest industries in our county, with many employed at the various phosphate plants. My dad worked at one for many years in the lab, before retiring a couple of years ago. They had some videos to watch about the phosphate mining process. It's not mines like you'd picture for coal, it's basically digging into the ground very deeply, but it's still referred to as the mines. Then you could tour the room with all the fossils that can be found in the phosphate. Lastly there is a large pile of the material (I've already forgotten the name) that the phosphate comes from. The kids could sort through the pile to look for shark teeth and any other sort of fossil they could find.
Thursday night the girls participated in a Career Exploration night. They'd put together reports on careers they are interested in, or at least found interesting enough to select for this event. They each gave a 3 minute or so speech about the career they'd selected. The group was small, but it will be an annual event and will hopefully get bigger. Tori spoke about a paralegal, Beth chose a creative writer and Lili chose a graphic designer.
Friday was a schoolwork and housework day. We went to clean a house in my husband's community in the afternoon. He was starting vacation for this week, so we were all in a take it easy, feeling lazy kind of mood.
Saturday Phil started on his to do list. Not my kind of vacation, but it's what he wanted to do. First was the sprinkler system. Two zones weren't working, and within those and other zones, some of the sprinkler heads were clogged or stuck. He got those fixed but accidentally cut the main water line to the house. That was a pretty quick repair but we found the kitchen and master bath sinks wouldn't work. We put attempting to repair those on hold until today, just in case we needed a plumber. We didn't want to have to pay for a Sunday call.
Sunday was church in the morning, hang out and relax in the afternoon, then my choice for evening activity. I'll write about that in another post.
Today we fixed the kitchen and master bath sink, mostly. Now the kitchen hot water line is leaking a little, but that should be a quick fix tomorrow. Phil did some work on getting a veggie garden started in the backyard. We all worked on the laundry. Phil and I went grocery shopping together, which always results in us buying too much. We just made homemade pizza and are waiting for them to finish cooking.
PE tomorrow, Teachers' Meeting and Spring Fun Day on Thursday. Art co-op is on the schedule for Thursday afternoon, but I think we planned that before we decided to take the summer off. Friday we are having our last Lit Club discussion for the year, here at the house. Our book is City of Ember and we are going to watch the movie and talk about how different the movie is from the book.
