I checked the website for PCC-Polk Community College this weekend and found they now have the schedule for the Summer '09 term and course listing available. During the Summer session there are classes that are in the 8, 10 or 12 week range, which are considered to run the length of that term. There are also 6 week classes in term 3A or term 3B. Tori wants to take an in person class, not one of the online or hybrid classes, and we need to stick with either the Lakeland campus or possibly classes at the Airside building, near the Lakeland airport. Taking a full summer session class is preferable to the even shorter 6 week classes.
I went through the online catalog with Tori's college plan in hand and knowing that the idea of taking College Algebra as her first class might not pan out. We'd been advised that the courses are heavily compressed and that such a difficult course may not be the best choice. After eliminating the classes that were online, hybrid, held at another campus, or not in her college plan at all, we weren't left with many choices. For the full summer term she could choose from Intro to Sociology or Human Anatomy & Physiology I, that's it. Dual enrolled students have to wait to register until regular students have a chance, so it's possible those two classes will be full by the time it's her turn to register. I suggested she also pick some classes from Term 3A or 3B as backups. So, she picked Wellness Concepts and US History 1877-Today as options. Both are available in both 3A and 3B. College Algebra is also listed in the six week class listing, but having the class so compressed and reviews at Rate My Professor.com that describe the teacher as good but speedy, left us deciding that class can wait until the fall.
So now we need to fill out the application and other forms and find out whether we need to switch from being registered with a private school to being registered with the county. The private school we are using, Florida Unschoolers, is in a different county, so it may or may not be an issue.
On a side note, the girls went nuts this weekend. They went for a walk down the street and noticed some coconuts set out with other lawn debris for pickup. They took them and brought them home to open. They worked on them for quite awhile, using many different tools from the garage, but they were able to open them. I don't care for the taste or smell of coconut ever, but to smell these obviously too long on the ground nuts was just terrible. Beth said the milk smells like coconut wine, good and fermented. Blech! They had fun, that's all that really matters.
I had a dentist appointment this morning. No new cavities, plenty still to be dealt with. We have PE and Co-op tomorrow and the science fair on Thursday. It's a fairly lightweight week, let's hope it stays that way.
